Eleven News at Noon: Final Broadcasts

I'm so late in getting these up, like I am with everything, but here are my last two Eleven News at Noon broadcasts.  My final broadcast was very bittersweet and I'll be very sad to leave the newsroom.  I cannot even begin to tell you how many hours I've spent in that room writing and editing stories.  I know I had quite a dramatic post a few days ago about not having a ton of close friends in the program, but you know what, I really did enjoy my time there.  And despite what I said, I have made some wonderful friends there who I'm sure I'll keep in touch with for years to come.  The professors were also great and pushed me to do my best each and every day.  And for my past semester of anchoring I had some absolutely fantastic producers and reporters.  I don't think we had one major technical difficulty the whole semester...which means I have plenty of video to choose from for my resume!  As an anchor I can't take a bit of credit for the wonderful show that our team puts on.  I just show up and read what they give me.  The Tuesday team was great and always on top of things.

So thank you  everyone in the BYU Department of Broadcast Journalism!  You're the best!

Eleven News at Noon

Here is my newscast from today!  I anchored the show today and put together a package that I shot a while back.  Go to 9:17 to see my story about Ogden-based Whirlybird Helicopters.  Whirlybird owner Adam Wilkerson started a program called Inches for Hours.  Aspiring pilots get a free hour of flight if they donate their hair to Locks of Love.  I spent a really fun afternoon with the guys at Whirlybird and I even got to go on a helicopter ride!  They are a great bunch of pilots, and not that I'm an expert or anything, but I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to take flying lessons.  They are always doing their best to give back to the community and on March 26th and 27th they are teaming up with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for an open house at their Ogden and Spanish Fork locations.  It goes from 9am-8pm both days and they'll donate $5 a ride to the foundation.  So go check it out and take a ride in a helicopter!  I sure you'll have as much fun as I did! And to find out more about Whirlybird go here.

For my package I also interviewed a darling girl named Alexis who received a wig from Locks of Love.  I really enjoyed meeting Alexis and her mom Lara.  Alexis is a very strong nine-year-old who lost her hair at age 5 from a disease called Alopecia.  For anyone who doesn't know about Locks of Love -- they make wigs out of donated hair and give them to children suffering from long-term hair loss.  It is a great organization and the wigs mean so much to the kids who receive them.  I've known quite a few people who have donated their hair and if mine actually grew faster than an inch a year I would participate as well.  For more info on Locks of Love and for instructions on how to donate go here.

I hope you enjoy the show!

When I grow up...I wanna be famous!

Watch out Anderson Cooper....

Step back Katie Couric..

Here comes Kaitlyn Thatcher!

This semester I will be fulfilling a dream I have had since I first walked onto the set of the BYU Daily News back in August of '05...

Yes, I, Kaitlyn Joy Thatcher, admitted shopaholic and Diet Coke addict, will be anchoring the Daily News at Noon every Monday.

I'm not really sure what my superiors in the Communications Department were thinking but I'll try not to let them down.

Be sure not to miss my debut, Monday, September 15th at noon on KBYU (channel 11 in Provo).

Who knows this may be just the beginning of an illustrious broadcast career. Someday I could be as big as Walter Cronkite and my face will be all over commercials and on the sides of city buses and you'll all say, I knew her back before she was famous.

But I won't really care about the fame because I'll be concentrating on hard-hitting stories and I'll be interviewing the President of the United States and jetting off to Africa with Bono and Angelina Jolie to make documentaries about the plight of starving children.

Hey, a girl can dream, right?
